With a $20,000 donation from GL Homes, Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County opened its first food pantry during Hunger Action Month.

The food pantry, known as The CHU (pronounced chew) was created for the exclusive use of Club members and their families of The Chuck Hill Unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County, located in Port St. Lucie.  The CHU serves over 120 Club members.  The CHU will provide essential groceries to nearly 500 people, which includes Club family members.

These funds allowed the nonprofit to purchase a refrigerator, stand-alone freezer, shelves and six months of nutritious food including lean meat, fresh fruit and vegetables, cereal, rice, beans and pasta.

“No one can be expected to learn, focus or grow on an empty belly. Hunger is a critical need that must be met,” said GL Homes Senior Director of Community Relations Sarah Alsofrom.  “GL Homes wants to empower and embrace these children and families to support them by providing healthy food.”

Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County enables all young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.  Boys & Girls Clubs provide a world-class Club experience that assures success is within reach of every young person with all members on track to graduate from high school with a plan for the future, demonstrating good character and citizenship, and living a healthy lifestyle.
