Because of COVID-19 restrictions, The Lord’s Place had to work quickly to ensure social distancing and continue to provide services to those who were homeless in the community. They set up portable tents outside to continue its Joshua Café lunches to those experiencing homelessness.

Then a massive storm hit the area and both tents were demolished. The Lord’s Place put out an appeal to the community and they immediately received a donated tent from Palm Beach County thanks to Commissioner Melissa McKinlay’s efforts and money to purchase an additional tent from long-time supporter GL Homes.

Both tents are industrial grade and provide much needed respite from the South Florida heat for those who are currently homeless. The massive size of the two tents allows The Lord’s Place to promote social distancing, as it continues to serve hot lunches outside in the tents that the County and GL Homes provided.

Palm Beach County Commissioner Melissa McKinlay:

“When Palm Beach County learned about the damage done to The Lord’s Place tent shade structure, we knew we had to help. It takes a combined effort, government and corporate partners like GL Homes, to make a positive impact. These tents provide dignity to one of our most vulnerable populations. We want those experiencing homelessness to know that we are here for them.”

Sarah Alsofrom, Director of Community Relations for GL Homes:

“How could our company say no to such a simple request? It is basic human decency to provide another human being with a comfortable place to eat a meal. Kudos to Palm Beach County Commissioner Melissa McKinlay who took the initiative to help The Lord’s Place and its clients. When we work together, we can get great things done.”
