GL Homes Builds Playground for The Lord’s Place

Playground opens at The Lord’s Place for kids whose families were homeless.

The kids swarmed over the playground the instant the celebratory ribbon was snipped.

This playground, with its colorful slides and ladders, is different from others, because this one is for children of formerly homeless families.

Nonprofit The Lord’s Place inaugurated the $40,000 playground Thursday on a quarter-acre spot near its Family Campus, a suburban West Palm Beach shelter.

CEO Diana Stanley said the land, once a garden, sat unused for a decade. “Why do we have an empty piece of land there?” she said she asked staffers. The project came about when a GL Homes official asked how it could help the nonprofit, which serves 1,600 men, women and children with supportive housing, employment services and other programs.

Over 10 months, GL spent more than 100 hours designing and installing the playground, said the company’s community relations director, Sarah Alsofrom. She noted that the playground was opening the day before school lets out for summer. “What better way to start a vacation?” she asked.
